Thai customs crackdown on smuggled Iphones
Thai Customs crackdown smuggled Iphones
After the release of Apple Iphone 6 and Iphone 6 plus, enthusiastic Thai entrepreneurs have been smuggling luxurious good, (in this case the newly released Iphone6 and Iphone6 plus) without declaring them to customs and avoiding tariff tax. With the sudden influx of Iphone6 before it’s official release in Thailand, Thai customs have announced yesterday that they will now be seizing Iphone6 and Iphone6 plus that haven’t gone through the proper customs clearance and paid tariff tax or to put it simply, those who smuggle IPhone 6/ IPhone 6 plus will be fined.
Latest, Thai customs have confiscated around 300 Iphones smuggled into Thailand at Suvarnabhumi international Airport in the past 4 days with the total worth of 21 million THB. The smartphones have been seen to be sold in Thailand such as MBK and with prices as high as 70,000 Thai Baht while the average pricing in Hong Kong and Singapore is only 30,000-40,000 THB. Customs Department director-general Somchai Sujjapongse commented to the press that he has ordered the strict blockage of smuggled smartphones until the official release date during November. These smuggled phones are affecting the sales of official carriers in Thailand and are overpriced compared to the actual prices of the new Iphone.
